My artwork is heavily influenced by game related concept art, the Japanese Manga and Anime, and the realms of sci-fi fantasy. I’m heavily influenced by the animation Samurai Champloo, Metal Gear Solid’s character design and the mech designs in the Amored Core series. All these themes can be represented by a number of amazing and dynamic art styles and my goal is to utilise such techniques to create my own unique worlds and styles.
From a work process point of view I work mostly in the digital realm, employing the use of digital brush strokes and cell shading type techniques to bring my creations to life. I tend to use various traditional techniques to start the image, either scanned in or replicated through the use of my Wacom graphics tablet. Image sizes tend to be around standard desktop resolution sizes with the emphasis on the ability to print the images at poster size.
The images tend to depict mostly character based elements and span from people, creatures all the way to vehicles and robots. I try to bring these characters to life with strong use of colour. For the action scenes, I try to capture a single frame that sums up the action or their personality.
Artist Bio
Matthew Carr is an emerging artist from the south east coast of New South Wales. Although Australian born, Matthew’s influences tend to reside within gaming and Japanese Anime culture. His style tries to keep up with the times as both these cultures have evolved over the years.
As a small child Matthew has always enjoyed drawing and doing various other art but it wasn’t until he was introduced to the Sega that he really followed art more intently. He started out learning to draw his favourite characters and spread to trying to create his own. When Matthew hit his teens he was formally introduced to the Japanese Anime culture, which he soon realised actually inspired a lot of the game art he enjoyed.
Matthew attended the University of Wollongong to study Computer Science and major in Game Development and Multimedia at the start of 2007. Though he enjoyed programming for games, he far more enjoyed working on the character concept art, the 3d modelling and model texturing. This then spurred him onto finding small unpaid online projects and even starts his own game, so that he could start making professional game art.
Now in the year 2011 he has finally gone back to study Fine Arts at the West Wollongong TAFE. During this time he has taken on a number of other small unpaid works to help out other independent game designers and hopefully expand his skills. All of this is to move towards his goal as becoming a game concept artist.
